Alfie McCarthy

Alfie McCarthy is from Ballyphehane but settled in Pinecroft, Grange after marrying Irene Bray from Douglas West.  Alfie played a starring role for Grangevale during the 1978/79 league and AOH Cup campaign.  Cork Celtic manager Paul O’Donovan responded by signing the star goalkeeper.  Despite losing McCarthy, Grangevale won the AOH Cup.  Alfie returned to Grangevale after his spell with Cork Celtic and gave many years of loyal service to the club both as a player and manager.

Grangevale v. Passage (1994): James O’Callaghan and Alfie McCarthy

James O’Callaghan played under age football with Douglas Hall but dedicated his adult career to Grangevale.  Equally at home at full back or in central midfield, O’Callaghan captained Grangevale to the final of the 1998 City Challenge Cup.  Since his retirement, the Tramore Rovers under-age division has been the beneficiary of his expertise and experience where James has assumed a coaching role.  James has also demonstrated his loyalty to Grangevale by assisting team manager Barry Twomey with coaching of the AUL 2 team in season 2006 / 2007.

Grangevale v. Ard-Na-Laoi (November 1999): Richard O’Sullivan, John Kenneally and Neil McSorley.

Richard O’Sullivan, fondly known as "Richie" is a native of Ballyclough but is now a popular figure in the Grange community.  Richie built a reputation as a tough tackling midfielder in the 1998 City Challenge Cup team and formed an integral part of the Grangevale “A” team management along with Peter Noonan and Mark Barrascale from 2004 to 2006.  In 1953 Grangevale House was one of the most prominent dwellings on the Grange Road and this inspired the naming of the club.  Many years later several other houses were built in the shadow of Grangevale House.  The park was named Grangevale Court and this is where Richard O'Sullivan resides.

John Kenneally emerged as an exciting prospect from the under 17 Grangevale team in 1990/'91 season  and later scored goals for fun with Grangevale during the late 1990’s when most seasons he finished as the clubs top goalscorer.  He is currently living in the U.S.A.  His brother Donal also played with the club while his father is Tony Kenneally, the well known Douglas G.A.A. official.

Neil McSorley earned a reputation as a goal scoring machine in a star studded Douglas Hall Youths team in 1991.  Also, a former Irish boxing champion and a distinguished gaelic footballer with Douglas G.A.A., McSorley later enjoyed a spell with Glasheen before joining Grangevale.  He captained the club during the 2003 centenary year and is currently  Grangevale’s top goal scorer.

Roy O’Mahony was a permanent fixture in the Grangevale defence in the mid 1990’s.  After spending time in Australia O’Mahony returned home and reclaimed his place in the Grangevale team and formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Liam Murphy which blossomed during the 1998 City Challenge Cup campaign.  Roy is married to Alison and now resides in Canada.

After moving to Grange from Clonmel in the late 1980's Ciaran became involved with Grangevale and quickly established himself as a prominent club member.  Initially, Ciaran played with the club but it is for his outstanding work as a committee member that he is remembered.  In 2005 Ciaran moved to Dublin but his commitment to Grangevale is not forgotten.

Dave Hayes joined Grangevale as a teenager in 1969.  Ten years later he was in his prime and was the hero of the 1979 AOH Cup final when he scored a hat-trick against Northvilla as Grangevale cruised to a 5-2 victory.  The following year Dave starred alongside Michael Treacy (RIP) for the Cork AUL Oscar Traynor Cup team.  In 1999, he was instrumental along with John Foley in establishing the Grangevale "B" team.  Remarkably, thirty seven years after making his debut, Dave remains an important part of Grangevale both on and off the pitch.  He still features with the Grangevale "B" team as well as being responsible for maintenance of the pitch in Grangevale Park.

Seán Molloy, club secretary presenting Colm Moore with a hall of fame award.

Colm Moore served Grangevale with distinction for many years.  He played a starring role in the 1979 AOH Cup final when his clever through ball against Northvilla set up Dave Hayes who proceeded to score the first of his three goals.  Colm featured prominently in the Grangevale teams that contested the 1990 Saxone Cup final against Bandon and the 1993 City Challenge Cup final against Albert Rovers.

Donie Cronin (left) and Dave Williamson (right) pictured at the City Challenge Cup tie between Grangevale “B” and Hillington played at Grangevale Park on 26/02/2006.

Donie Cronin is a founding member of Grangevale.  Along with his brothers and friends Donie used to spend his childhood playing “three goals in” at the entrance to Conran’s farm on the Grange Road.  One evening in 1953 it was suggested that the boys from the Grange Road form a club and this inspired the foundation of Grangevale A.F.C.  Donie's brothers Paddy and Neilly played with the club during Grangevale's formative years during which time his father Dan was also an influential club member.  Along with Duxie O'Leary, Donie managed the victorious Grangevale AOH Cup team in 1979.  Donie's son Peter played a starring role for Grangevale throughout the memorable campaign.  Donie is the honourary president of Grangevale A.F.C.

Dave Williamson was born in close proximity to the North Cathedral but resided in Greenmount for most of his formative years.  He played underage football with Friary Rovers and later was instrumental in the development of Everton football club.  Dave joined Grangevale and married Noreen O’Halloran from Tramway Terrace in 1957.  Dave, Noreen and their daughter Bernie have contributed so much to the development of the club that the Williamson name is now synonymous with Grangevale A.F.C.  During his playing days Dave was a tenacious left back and fondly recalls his battles with Douglas A.F.C. inside right Pat Walsh during their clashes at Pond Bank during the 1950’s.  Dave received a Hall of Fame Award from the AUL in 1997 in recognition of his services to football.

Donie Cronin and Dave Williamson have both given a lifetime’s service to Grangevale and attend matches every weekend where they pass on their wisdom to younger club members.
